What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found within the skin. Classified as a glycosaminoglycan, it plays a crucial role in maintaining skin hydration and supporting connective tissue. HA’s impressive ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water makes it a powerful humectant. This means it attracts and retains moisture in the skin, similar to a sponge.

Similar to collagen and elastin, our body’s natural production of HA declines with age. This contributes to dryness, fine lines, and a loss of skin plumpness. Topical application of HA in skincare can help address these concerns. By drawing and retaining moisture in the skin, HA helps slow down transepidermal water loss (TEWL), the process by which water evaporates from the skin’s surface. This translates to plumper, smoother skin with a more youthful appearance.

What can Hyaluronic Acid do for your skin?

Moisturising – often referred to as the “moisture magnet,” HA’s unique ability lies in attracting and retaining up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This surge in hydration plumps the skin, visibly reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving your complexion looking smoother and more youthful.1

Anti-ageing – as we age, our body naturally produces less HA. This, combined with external stressors like UV exposure, contributes to visible signs of ageing like wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Studies suggest it may stimulate collagen production, a key protein that provides structural support to the skin. This can lead to plumper and firmer skin.2

Skin Barrier – with its remarkable ability to retain moisture, it helps keep the skin barrier functioning optimally. This, in turn, reduces the risk of dehydration, irritation, and other skin concerns.

Anti-inflammatory – boasting anti-inflammatory benefits, it can soothe irritated skin and reduce redness. Studies suggest it may play a role in supporting tissue repair functions. This makes HA a valuable ingredient for those with sensitive skin or concerns like eczema or rosacea.3

How do you use Hyaluronic Acid?

HA has taken the skincare world by storm for a reason – its multitude of benefits! This versatile ingredient is widely used in cleansers, toners, serums, creams, eye creams, and masks. While HA can be included in various product types, it’s most effective in leave-on products. This allows for sustained contact with the skin, maximising its ability to absorb and retain moisture.

HA is a skincare superstar, but its effectiveness depends on proper application. While it attracts and retains moisture, when used incorrectly, HA can actually dehydrate the skin. HA molecules need water to function. If the environment lacks humidity (like dry winter air) or your skin isn’t damp, HA might draw moisture from deeper layers of your skin instead of attracting external moisture. To ensure HA works its magic, apply it to damp skin. This creates a reservoir of water for the HA to bind to, maximising its hydrating benefits.

The size of HA molecules (molecular weight) plays a key role in how deeply it penetrates the skin.4 Larger molecules sit on the skin’s surface, providing hydration and plumping benefits. Sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid with a lower molecular weight, can penetrate deeper. While neither form is inherently “better,” some products combine different molecular weights to achieve multi-layered hydration. This synergy helps deliver moisture to various skin levels, resulting in plumper, more hydrated skin overall.

HA works well with most powerhouse ingredients including retinol, salicylic acid, polyglutamic acid, vitamin C, galactomyces, bifida and bakuchiol.

Now that we know all about HA, get ready for an intense moisture surge with Mizon’s Hyaluronic 100. Your eye area will receive deep hydration while depuffing with Village 11’s Hydro Boost Eye Cream. The same can be said for OOTD’s Hyaluron x3 Serum Glowing Masks with 8 types of hyaluronic acid, get ready for buttery soft skin – a must for Sunday night pamper sessions.

Can you use Hyaluronic Acid when you’re pregnant?

While HA is generally considered safe for topical application on all skin types, those who experience hypersensitivity should exercise caution, especially pregnant or lactating individuals. Some studies show lower molecular weight HA may cause inflammation.5 If you have any concerns about incorporating HA into your routine while pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s always best to consult your healthcare provider. They can offer personalised advice based on your unique health situation.
